Dumai lies on the east coast of Sumatra in Riau province, facing the Strait of Malacca across the narrow Rupat Strait. The island of Rupat sits directly offshore, so from above the city looks out not onto open sea but onto a sheltered channel, with the coastline running in a long, gently curving line.
Industry dominates the waterfront. A large oil refinery and extensive port facilities occupy much of the shore, with tank farms, loading piers and access roads drawn as crisp geometric shapes.
