Dzüünharaa lies in Selenge Province in northern Mongolia, in the valley of the Kharaa River. Its location is set by the Trans-Mongolian Railway, which runs through the town on its way between Ulaanbaatar and the Russian border. On a map the tracks and the main road run side by side along the valley, and the town has grown in a band beside them.
Around the settled area the land opens into the broad grassland and low hills typical of Selenge, the country's main farming province.
