Elmina lies on the Central Region coast of Ghana, west of Cape Coast. Its map is shaped by water: the Benya Lagoon cuts in from the sea and separates the old town from the land to the north, while a busy fishing harbour sits at the lagoon's mouth. Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482 as São Jorge da Mina, stands on the point at the water's edge. Together with Fort St. Jago on the hill opposite, it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Ghana's forts and castles.
