From above, Esztergom sits on the right bank of the Danube, where the river marks the border between Hungary and Slovakia. The town gathers around a steep hill on the water's edge. A side arm of the river cuts off a long, thin island. Across the main channel, the town of Štúrovo mirrors it on the Slovak shore. The result is a map with a strong horizontal line of water and a dense cluster pressed against it.
The hill is the heart of the drawing. Its summit carries the basilica, the largest church in Hungary and the seat of the country's archbishop.
