Fairfax is an independent city in Northern Virginia, about twenty-five kilometres west of Washington, D.C. It is the seat of Fairfax County but is not legally part of it, an arrangement typical of Virginia. On a map it appears as a compact, irregular territory surrounded on all sides by the county's suburbs.
At its heart is Old Town Fairfax, where the historic county courthouse has stood since around 1800 at a crossroads of old routes.
