Falmouth sits near the southern tip of Cornwall, on the western side of the Fal estuary where it opens to the sea. The town stretches along a narrow neck of land between the harbour and the beaches of Falmouth Bay. On the map, streets climb up from the waterfront, a working dockyard lines the harbour, and a rocky headland points out to sea.
The estuary, known as Carrick Roads, is one of the largest natural harbours in the world.
