Finsterwalde sits in southern Brandenburg, in the lowland region of Lower Lusatia. From above, the town has a clear centre. A small core of older streets holds the market area and the town's Renaissance palace, and from there roads spread outward in several directions. The town is widely known in Germany as the Sängerstadt, the town of singers. The name comes from a popular song about the singers of Finsterwalde, and the town has kept the nickname and the singing tradition alive.
