Fire Island runs along the south shore of Long Island in New York, a barrier island dozens of kilometres long and often only a few hundred metres wide. On a map it is a single slim line, with the Atlantic on one side and Great South Bay on the other. Few coastal shapes are this stark or this easy to read.
Most of the island is car-free. Its communities are connected by boardwalks and reached by ferry from the Long Island mainland.
