Forest Lake is in Washington County, north of the Twin Cities, and takes its name from the lake at its centre. The lake is made up of three connected basins stretching from west to east. On the map they appear as a chain of irregular white shapes with a scalloped shoreline, lined by homes and docks.
The town centre sits on the west side of the lake, near Interstate 35. This is where the highway splits into I-35E, toward St. Paul, and I-35W, toward Minneapolis.
