The Fylde is the flat coastal plain of west Lancashire. The borough of the same name covers Lytham St Annes on the coast and market towns such as Kirkham inland. From above, the most striking feature is the shoreline. Sand dunes and long straight promenades face the Irish Sea, and the wide mouth of the Ribble estuary curves along the southern edge.
Lytham St Annes developed as two neighbouring resorts. The streets are laid out in the regular pattern of Victorian seaside planning, and a white windmill stands on Lytham Green facing the estuary.
