Gāndhīdhām is one of India's younger cities, planned in the years after Partition to house refugees from Sindh. Its map reflects that origin: rather than the tangled lanes of an old bazaar town, it shows a regular layout of sectors, broad roads and large blocks arranged with deliberate spacing.
