Gerona sits in the province of Tarlac, on the wide plain that runs north from Manila toward the Ilocos and Cordillera foothills. From above, the town reads as a compact cluster of streets threaded along the main north road, with barangays spreading out into a patchwork of paddies, irrigation lines and farm tracks. The ground is almost perfectly level, so the map is drawn by roads and waterways rather than by hills.
The town shares its name with the Catalan city of Girona, using the older Spanish spelling. That link dates to the colonial period, when many Luzon towns were given Spanish names. Today Gerona is mainly an agricultural municipality, and the rhythm of the rice seasons is written into its land use.
