Grafton stands on the Clarence River in northern New South Wales, where the river is wide and slow, curving through the flat country of the Clarence Valley. The city centre occupies the northern bank in a regular grid of wide streets, while South Grafton faces it across the water. From above, the river dominates, dividing the map into two distinct halves.
Two bridges link the banks. The older one, opened in 1932, carries road and rail on two levels, and a newer road bridge now runs beside it.
