Graz, Austria's second-largest city, is divided by the Mur, which flows almost due south through the centre. On the east bank the old town gathers at the foot of the Schlossberg, a steep wooded hill that interrupts the street pattern like a knot in wood. On the west bank, the Lend and Gries districts spread in a looser and more regular grid.
The historic centre and Schloss Eggenberg on the western side are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the difference in scale shows on a map: narrow lanes and courtyards in the old town, a formal palace garden in the west.
