Gubkin lies in Belgorod Oblast in southern Russia, in the heart of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, one of the richest iron ore deposits on earth. The town was built in the mid twentieth century to serve the mines. It is named after the geologist Ivan Gubkin, who led early studies of the anomaly. Its plan reflects that origin: orderly and practical.
Beside the town lies the Lebedinsky mining and processing plant, whose open pit is among the largest in the world.
