Guimarães lies in the Minho region of northern Portugal, in a valley surrounded by green hills. On a map, the historic centre stands out as a dense, irregular tangle of lanes stretching roughly from the castle and the Ducal Palace in the north down to the squares of the old town. To the south-east, the Penha hill rises steeply, covered with woods and reached by a cable car from the town. Its slopes form a large open area next to the streets.
