Gulebage lies in the Yarkand oasis in southwestern Xinjiang, on the edge of the county town of Shache. Water from the mountains shapes this landscape, carried across flat land by canals and ditches. The Yarkand oasis was a stop on the southern Silk Road route around the Taklamakan Desert, and its settlement pattern reflects a long farming tradition.
