Gyula lies in south-eastern Hungary, a few kilometres from the Romanian border, on the flat land of the Great Hungarian Plain. The White Körös passes the town and narrower channels run through it, so water shows up on the map in several places at once. The streets spread out from the centre in a loose, irregular pattern rather than a strict grid.
At its heart is Gyula Castle, a Gothic brick fortress often described as the only surviving lowland brick castle of its kind in Central Europe.
