Hajiawa lies in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, on the open plain around Ranya, not far from the northern reaches of Lake Dukan. The land here is flat and farmed, ringed by the high ridges of the Zagros foothills. The town's map shows a compact street network set in a wide agricultural basin.
