Ḩaql is the northernmost town on Saudi Arabia's Gulf of Aqaba coast, set on the eastern shore close to the border with Jordan. On the map it is a narrow band of streets and blocks squeezed between the water and the rugged desert mountains inland, a linear town shaped almost entirely by its coastline.
From its beaches the view takes in several countries at once: the Jordanian port of Aqaba and Israel's Eilat at the head of the gulf, and the mountains of Egypt's Sinai across the water.
