Heide is the district town of Dithmarschen in Schleswig-Holstein, a short distance inland from the North Sea coast. Its defining feature is the Marktplatz, often described as the largest undeveloped market square in Germany. On a map it appears as an unusually large open space right at the centre of town.
The streets of the old town surround the square and then radiate outward toward the surrounding villages and the flat marshland beyond.
