Hénin-Beaumont is in the Pas-de-Calais department, in the heart of the former Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal basin. The present town was formed in 1971 from the merger of Hénin-Liétard and Beaumont-en-Artois. From above, its street network is dense and irregular, with no single centre.
