Hervey Bay is a string of seaside suburbs along the coast of southeast Queensland, joined by a continuous esplanade that follows the shoreline. From above, the city is wide rather than deep, a band of streets running parallel to the water, with the calm bay in front and farmland and bushland behind.
Across the water lies K'gari, formerly Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island, which shelters the bay from the open Pacific.
