Hof sits in the far northeast of Bavaria, close to where Saxony, Thuringia and the Czech Republic meet. On a map, the town gathers along the upper Saale, which enters from the south and winds through the centre before heading north. Rail lines fan out from the station, and the built-up area thins quickly into wooded hills and farmland on every side.
Much of the old town was destroyed by a great fire in 1823, so the rebuilt centre looks different from the tangled cores of many Franconian towns. A long main street runs through it, lined by orderly blocks, while older lanes survive around the churches.
