Ibotirama sits on the banks of the São Francisco, one of Brazil's great rivers, in the semi-arid interior of Bahia. On a map the river is the dominant element: a wide band of water with sandbanks and islands, bending past the town, with the urban grid pressed against its bank. The town is an important crossing point.
