Iguaba Grande sits on the northern shore of the Lagoa de Araruama, in the Região dos Lagos east of Rio de Janeiro. The lagoon is one of the largest hypersaline lagoons in the world, and it fills much of the map with a broad expanse of water. The town's streets follow its edge in a band between shore and higher ground.
The town is small and mostly residential, with holiday homes, a waterfront and calm beaches facing the lagoon rather than the open sea.
