Inkisi sits in Kongo Central province in the west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the river that shares its name. The town lies on the main corridor between Kinshasa and the port of Matadi, and on a map that corridor is its backbone. A highway and a railway run through the town, with streets on either side that gradually loosen into scattered compounds and fields.
The Inkisi River winds through the landscape in broad loops before flowing north toward the Congo River. It is known for a botanical garden founded by Jesuit missionaries.
