Ipixuna is in the far west of Amazonas state, not far from the border with Acre, in a region where rivers do the work of roads. The town stands on the bank of the Juruá, one of the Amazon's great winding tributaries. On a map, the river is the whole story: looping bends, sandbanks, and old channels cut off from the main flow and left as crescent-shaped lakes.
The town itself is small and simple in plan: a few parallel streets along the high bank, cross streets heading inland, and then forest.
