Istok, known in Albanian as Istog, lies in western Kosovo at the northern edge of the Dukagjin plain, below the slopes of the Mokna range. Its name means spring or source, and the Istog river rises close to the town in a strong karst spring. On a map the water appears right at the edge of the streets and then flows out across the plain.
The town has a small, walkable centre, with streets fanning out toward the surrounding villages and farmland spreading across the flat ground to the south.
