Itapeva sits in the southwest of São Paulo state, far from the coast, on high, gently rolling ground. From above, the town centre is a tight grid of short blocks. The name comes from Tupi and is usually translated as flat stone. The town was once known as Faxina, and older documents still use that name. Today it serves a wide agricultural region known for grain, cattle and large plantations of pine and eucalyptus.
