Itsukaichi lies in the far west of the Tokyo Metropolis, where the Kanto plain meets the forested mountains of the Okutama area. It was a separate town until 1995, when it merged with neighbouring Akita to form the city of Akiruno. On a map the old town follows the valley of the Aki River, with streets stretched along the valley floor.
The name means fifth-day market, after the regular markets once held here, and the long main street still reflects that trading past.
