İznik Map Poster & Print
İznik lies on the eastern shore of Lake İznik in Bursa Province, northwestern Turkey. It is the ancient city of Nicaea, and its plan is one of the clearest historic layouts in the country. Two main streets cross at right angles in the centre and run between four gates in the old walls. The grid around them still follows the ancient plan.
The city walls, rebuilt and extended in Roman and Byzantine times, still enclose much of the town in a loop about five kilometres long. Nicaea hosted the First Council of Nicaea in 325, which produced the Nicene Creed. In the Ottoman period, İznik became famous for its glazed tiles and pottery. The Hagia Sophia, once a church, stands near the central crossroads.
