Jamkhandi lies in the Bagalkot district of northern Karnataka, on the broad, open land of the Deccan plateau not far from the Krishna river. From above, the town has a dense older core of narrow, irregular streets, with newer neighbourhoods spreading outward in more regular blocks. Until 1948, Jamkhandi was the capital of a princely state ruled by the Patwardhan family, and the older part of town reflects that role, with a compact centre that grew around the seat of the court.
