Jhānsi lies in the Bundelkhand region of southern Uttar Pradesh, close to the border with Madhya Pradesh. The landscape here is rocky and uneven. The city grew around a granite hill crowned by Jhansi Fort, built in the early seventeenth century by the Bundela ruler Bir Singh Deo, and the fort still overlooks the old town.
The city's best-known figure is Rani Lakshmibai, who led its defence during the uprising of 1857 and remains a national symbol of resistance. The older quarters below the fort were once enclosed by a wall and keep the narrow, irregular streets of a historic market town. The British cantonment and the railway added a more spacious, regular pattern beside them.
Jhansi is now a major railway junction, and the tracks form strong lines across any Jhānsi map poster, meeting in a broad band of sidings. Around them are the curving roads of the cantonment, reservoirs and tanks, and rock outcrops that interrupt the street network.
