Jishou lies in the Wuling Mountains of western Hunan, the capital of the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. The city is squeezed into a narrow valley, and on a map it forms a long, winding shape following the river, with steep hills pressing in on both sides.
