Jiuchi is a town in the municipality of Chongqing, near Wanzhou in the Three Gorges region along the Yangtze. The land here is steep and folded, and settlements follow the ground closely. On the map, streets rarely run straight for long. They bend along the slopes, climb between terraces and gather wherever the land is flat enough to build on.
The rise of the Yangtze behind the Three Gorges Dam reshaped the whole region. Old riverside towns were flooded, and much was rebuilt on higher ground.
