Jurong covers the western part of Singapore. Most of it was built from the 1960s onward as the country's first major industrial estate. Swamp and low hills were reshaped into a planned landscape of factory blocks, port facilities and housing estates. Jurong Lake sits in the middle of the district, created by damming the Jurong River. Its shoreline and the parkland around it, including the Chinese and Japanese gardens on its islands, form the main open space on the map.
