Kāmthi lies about 15 kilometres northeast of Nagpur in Maharashtra, on the banks of the Kanhan river. It developed in the early nineteenth century as a British military cantonment, and the town still shows that division on its map: the cantonment with broad, straight roads and generous open ground, and the civil town with a much tighter mesh of lanes and markets.
The Kanhan curves along the edge of town, and its wide channel and banks show up as a strong natural line. Road and rail links run toward Nagpur, tying Kāmthi into the growing metropolitan area.
