Kinoshita lies in the Ina Valley in southern Nagano Prefecture. The Tenryū River carved this long corridor between the Central Alps to the west and the Southern Alps to the east. The valley floor and its terraces are densely farmed and settled. On the map they appear as a strip of streets, rail and fields running roughly north to south.
Streets tend to follow the contours of the land. Older roads run along the terraces, and newer ones branch toward residential areas.
