Kirundo is a provincial capital in the far north of Burundi, near the Rwandan border, in an area known for its lakes. On a map the town is a modest cluster of streets on a rise. Around it, rounded hills are divided into small farm plots, and to the north and east the shapes of several lakes break up the land.
This is not a place of long grids or dense blocks. The streets follow the ground, roads run along ridges and past the water, and houses thin out gradually into cultivated hillside.
