Klatovy is a historic town in the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic, in southwestern Bohemia, and often called the gateway to the Šumava mountains. It was founded in the thirteenth century as a royal town, and its medieval plan is still easy to read from above: a regular grid of streets around a large central square.
Parts of the old fortifications survive, and the outline of the former walls shows as a clear ring around the historic core.
