Kolpino sits on the southeastern edge of St. Petersburg, formally part of the city yet laid out as a town of its own. The Izhora River runs through it from south to north, widening into a pond behind an old dam near the centre. The town grew around the Izhora works, founded in the early eighteenth century under Peter the Great to supply the Admiralty.
