Krujë is built on the steep slope of a mountain above central Albania's coastal plain, north of Tirana. On a map the relief shapes everything. The castle sits on a rocky spur at the upper edge of the town.
Krujë is closely tied to Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero. In the fifteenth century he defended the castle through several Ottoman sieges. The castle now contains the Skanderbeg Museum and an ethnographic museum.
