Kŭlob is the main town of eastern Khatlon Province, set in a broad valley along the Yakhsu river in the south of Tajikistan. From above, the town forms a compact, mostly low-rise grid of streets and courtyards, surrounded by irrigated fields and orchards that stretch toward the hills. Its best-known monument is the mausoleum of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, a fourteenth-century Persian scholar and Sufi who is honoured across Central and South Asia.
