Laon stands on a long, isolated ridge that rises sharply from the flat countryside of the Aisne. From above, the upper town has an unmistakable shape: a narrow crescent of streets following the crest of the hill, wrapped around a wooded hollow known as the Cuve Saint-Vincent.
