Layton sits in Davis County on the narrow strip of land between the Wasatch Mountains to the east and the marshes of the Great Salt Lake to the west. From above, its streets follow the numbered grid common to northern Utah, with long east–west and north–south roads dividing the city into large square sections. Inside those squares, residential streets curve and loop.
Interstate 15 and US 89 run through the city from north to south, drawn as bold lines against the finer neighbourhood pattern. To the east, the land rises towards the mountains and the streets begin to bend with the slope.
