Leatherhead grew up at a crossing of the River Mole, at the point where the river cuts through the chalk of the North Downs in what is known as the Mole Gap. The old town centre sits on rising ground east of the river. Its short high street and crossroads are compact, and they fan out into residential roads that climb gently away from the water.
The Town Bridge carries the road across the Mole on a long run of low arches. It is one of the most recognisable structures in the town. On a map the river forms a soft curving line along the western side, with meadows and open land beside it, while the M25 passes to the north.
