Ludwigsfelde lies in Brandenburg just beyond the southern edge of Berlin, in a landscape of pine forest, sandy soil and small lakes. It grew from a small village into a town, largely through industry in the twentieth century. Vehicle manufacturing defines the town. In GDR times the IFA works built the W50 truck here, and after reunification Mercedes-Benz took over the plant and now builds vans on the site.
