Wei River valley
The town follows the Wei River through a narrow valley, so the river, the main road and the rail line run side by side through the centre of the map.

Luomen Map Poster & Print
Luomen is in Tianshui prefecture in southeastern Gansu, in the upper valley of the Wei River. Here the loess plateau is cut into steep hills and ravines, and in towns like this the land decides the shape of the map. Streets are pressed into the valley floor, so the town is long and narrow and follows the river.
From above, the Wei is the main line, flanked by roads and a railway that use the same flat ground. Side valleys branch off into the hills, with smaller lanes and settlements climbing along them. Beyond the town, the terrain is terraced and irregular, and the dense grid of a plains city never appears.
A Luomen map poster shows a town that has adapted to its landscape. It stretches out horizontally, broken by bends in the river and by ridges reaching down to the water. The result is a composition shaped by the valley more than by any plan.

Loess hills
Steep, eroded hills of the loess plateau hem the valley in, and their broken terrain limits the streets to the flat ground near the water.
Side ravines
Smaller valleys branch away from the river, each carrying a thin road and a scatter of buildings, like tributaries leading off the main channel.

For families with roots in the Wei valley, a map of Luomen captures the shape of home: a river, a road and hills close on both sides. It is an unusual map to hang, and personal because of that.
