Ma'an sits high on the southern Jordanian plateau, where the land flattens into stony desert. From above the town is a tight cluster of low blocks with no river or coastline to shape it. For centuries the town was a stop on the pilgrim road between Damascus and the Hejaz, and in the early twentieth century the Hejaz Railway passed through.
